Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the Global Startup Meet-up 2025, held at the Seoul Partners House Convention Hall. The event ran from 2 PM to 5 PM, bringing together entrepreneurs, professors, business professionals, and students from different parts of the world. As someone experiencing Korea’s startup environment from a foreigner’s perspective, it was both insightful and inspiring.

A Warm Welcome and a Professional Start

Upon entering the venue, participants received pre-prepared ID cards with their names printed—a small but impressive touch that showed the organizers’ professionalism. It immediately set the tone for a well-coordinated and globally inclusive event.

The opening session introduced several entrepreneurs, startup founders, and a former Korean tax counselor, who shared their journeys and experiences inside Korea’s dynamic startup ecosystem. Hearing real stories from people working in different fields helped the audience understand how Korea supports innovation and what opportunities exist for global founders.

Diverse Global Participation

One of the standout aspects of the event was its multicultural audience. Participants came from France, Germany, Vietnam, Japan, Turkey, Colombo, China, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and many other countries.
There were also representatives from Jeju CCI, professors from international institutions, businesspeople, and students. The diversity reflected the increasing global interest in Korea as a business-friendly and technologically advanced market.

A Short Break, New Connections

After nearly one and a half hours of discussions, we had a 10-minute snack break. The venue had arranged a snack buffet with drinks, creating a relaxed environment for networking. It was a great opportunity to talk, exchange ideas, and make connections with people from various backgrounds.

Panel Discussions: Why Korea?

The second half of the program featured panel discussions and Q&A sessions, focusing on important topics for foreigners in Korea’s business environment.
The main discussion points included:

1. Why Korea for Startups?

The panel highlighted Korea’s rapidly growing tech market, government-backed programs, innovative culture, and global expansion opportunities.

2. Business Convenience for Foreigners

Speakers agreed that Korea is becoming increasingly convenient for foreign entrepreneurs. However, finding the right job or business information can still be challenging, and better information access would be helpful.

3. Visa-Related Discussions

Visa concerns were one of the most relevant topics for many attendees.
Some key points discussed:

  • For startups, visas like D-8 are possible, but documentation and consultation are important.

  • For foreign employees, the system can be strict unless they fall under special visas such as researcher, professor, or special talent categories.

  • Unlike some European countries, Korea’s special visas are not numerically limited, giving more flexibility for global talent.

  • Students can explore the possibility of transitioning from D-2 to D-8 with the help of their university’s International Students Office.

  • A survey was conducted among the audience regarding visa challenges, and attendees were encouraged to visit relevant support centers for guidance.

A Meaningful Learning Experience

Overall, the Global Startup Meet-up was a well-structured, informative, and inspiring event. It provided a clear picture of the opportunities and challenges in Korea’s startup ecosystem—especially for foreigners hoping to build a business or career here.

Personally, the event helped me understand how Korea is working to support global entrepreneurs and how international collaboration is shaping the country’s future. It was a memorable experience that strengthened my interest in Korea’s innovative landscape.
