Student life is one of the most vital, memorable phases of a person’s life. The phase of student life builds the foundation of our life as well as any nation. In student life, we learn to grow emotionally, physically, philosophically as well as socially is a period of transformation, self-discovery, and boundless opportunities. It is a time when a student undergoes changes and faces challenges in academics, friendships, and personal growth. Which is why, the student life is regarded as ‘Golden life’ as students learn many essential things. It is a memorable time in everyone’s life, especially school children's days due to innocence, discipline, honesty, curiosity, respect, kindness, optimism and many more sweet memories. We must strive to be good students not just academically but for good human qualities also.

Studying abroad in South Korea is a chance to experience a dynamic country of ancient history, cutting-edge technology, explore innovative economic powerhouse through your studying and breathtaking natural scenery. With record growth in its international student population, study abroad programs in the Republic of Korea are booming, attracting thousands of international students each year for diverse reasons.

Things I would like to try if I had the chance to study in Korea

People do not realize how lucky and privileged one is to even get a student life. As I have recently finished my Master Degree and am about to finish the law degree. If I am given a chance to study in Korea then I will go either with the Korean language or the LLM(law) master degree course in Busan.

Korean is one of my favourite foreign languages and I consider it as my second language. After completing my language course and having fluency in Korean language like a native speaker, I will participate in different types of speaking and various types of Korean contests. And if I go with a Law degree then I would render justice and free legal service to the needy people depending on the cases.

Following are the things I have to do if I am given a chance to go to Korea to study and have an amazing and rewarding experience.

Active with the International Student Organization

There is likely a program, or some activities, at every Korean university that helps international students make connections with Korean students as well as other foreign students. The organizations have different names in different universities such as Korea University Buddy Assistants (KUBA) and many more. These organizations usually are there to support you, to help you in your new home country with everyday matters as well as organize trips to visit amazing places in Korea. Visit the international student office on your university campus to see what kind of programs are available.

No Red Ink with Person Name

In Korea, it’s rude to write someone’s name in red ink. This is based on culture. In the past, red ink was used to write deceased peoples’ names. If someone is still living and you write their name with this color, you are wishing them harm, as the tradition goes. It is okay to write with a red pen, just don’t write down names.

Download the Important Apps

These apps will make your Korean study abroad life easier, especially as you get settled navigating the streets and making new friends as I had to use in Korea.

  • Kakao Talk: Similar to WhatsApp, it is the most popular free messaging app in South Korea.

  • Kakao Metro: Use this to navigate the subways in cities of Korea.

  • Naver Map.: This is Korea’s take on Google Maps, offering more functions. It is super popular and helpful.

  • Kakao Map: Kakou map is similar to Naver map.

Learn or Understand the History and Culture of Korea

Just be familiar with major past and current events. References to things to know why South and North Korea are divided, Japan’s occupation of Korea in the early 20th century and current situation of the United States-South Korea relations and army troops. It also helps to understand Korea’s relations to its neighbors. I stay up to date with current news while studying abroad in Korea. Combine study with travel, inclusive of cultural activities and many more.

Explore the country

I take opportunities to visit other parts of the country which I did not go to. There are so many things to see while studying abroad in South Korea. Getting around safely in South Korea is easy. I Pack the bags and go for the adventures.

Working part-time and Play Lotto and go to Casino

Having part-time work could be another way to immerse yourself in the Korean lifestyle and culture in free time while staying in Korea and earning the money in a legal way. Nonetheless, there are certain restrictions to legally work part-time in Korea and I play to buy the lotto and go to the casino and try my luck but responsibly.

Eat favourite dishes

One of the cornerstones of every culture are the traditional foods and dishes they have. There are so many delicious traditional dishes for sure I would like to try my favourite Korean dish. Eating out is cheap and a great way to be adventurous. The saying Bab meog eoss eoyo?(밥먹었어요?) or “Have you eaten” is also used as a greeting. Going to lunch or dinner with your friends, classmates and colleagues is highly recommended in creating is seen as a social event.

Visit Norebang

When you stroll the streets of any Korean city you will see signs with 노래방(Norebang) everywhere. Norebang is Korean karaoke, “Nore” means song or sing and “bang” means room, which means song or singing room. It is very popular among all ages in South Korea. When visiting Korea, you can try it out once.

Explore Festivals while studying

All Korean Universities host their own festivals, activities, even the city as well the local government. I visit my university’s festival as well as external festivals and programs and participate.

Have a Close Look

I study Korean politics, visas and popular culture to get to know about the country better and thus, have a better understanding of why some things are the way they are in Korea. It will also be easier for me to adapt to the culture when I understand it more.

Meet few Special People

I would like to meet a few people who have helped me during my manufacturing industry career in Korea which I will never ever forget. Those few people are ChaJangnim (차장), JooImnim (주임) and others.

When abroad, do things you would not do back home, take part in activities that might seem like a phenomenon, do not be prejudiced and make memorable history.
